Athens proudly retains elements of its past culture as a bustling port, from the lower historic district’s array of historic architecture to the Athens Cultural Center which continues the tradition of art which began with the Hudson River School over 150 years ago.
We honor our culture, past and present, throughout the year including our pinnacle celebration, the annual Athens Street Festival.
Certainly the greatest street festival on the Hudson River, the Athens 35th Annual Street Festival was held on Saturday, July 11, 2009 along Second Street and in the Riverside Park. This year's 36th Annual Street Festival will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2010.
Festivities began at 10 AM with over 150 different booths offering crafts, unique gift items and specialties. Food and drinks of all kinds were available: barbeque pulled pork, sausage and pepper, cotton candy, kettle corn and much more.
Three stages were lit up with live entertainment. Lighthouse tours were provided all day and there was also an antique and classic car show.
For the kids there were carnival rides, a magician, a ventriloquist and carriage rides.
Despite the weather, the night was ended in style, with a huge fireworks display.
We look forward to next year! For more information visit www.athensstreetfestival.com
